Analog inputs

Edge

(!)

Note:
Specific inputs and outputs are present only on certain models of Unipi Edge. Overview of available I/O for each model can be found here.

Every analog input is divided into positive pole AI and negative pole AG. The way the measurement mode is set depends on the software used. Positive pole (signal) is then connected to AIx terminal and the negative pole of the measured external device is connected to its corresponding AGx terminal.

(!)

Attention:
Before connecting the measured device, it is necessary to check measurement settings using the chosen software and according to the type of the connected device - see the measurement description on individual sections below.

Connection

The following images illustrate the setup for measuring a voltage and current source on AI and AG terminals.

Voltage measurement

Current measurement

Resistance sensors can be connected to analog inputs using two wires. The compensation of the lead resistance and the conversion to temperature according to the selected sensor is up to the user application.

Attention:
Keep in mind: each analog input has different measurement modes, see the Description of inputs and modes below for more information.

Description of inputs and modes

Unipi Edge has 3 types of analog inputs with different measurement modes. The following table lists all analog inputs and what measurement modes they support.

Special functions

Aside from the standard inputs and outputs, Unipi Edge units also feature additional functions for broadening the possible applications, performance optimization and monitoring of the entire project. These functions are calculated directly by the I/O microprocessor, making them independent on the control software.

Here you can find more information and tutorials about special functions for:

Default configuration
This function is used to save the current configuration of inputs, outputs and other interfaces into memory. In case of power cycle of the device or reboot, the stored configuration is loaded and applied. This functionality is also known as “copy running-config to startup-config”.

Stored data Default configuration
Measurement mode AI1 voltage measurement
AI2 voltage measurement
AI3 voltage measurement
AI4 resistance measurement
AI5 resistance measurement

Master Watchdog
This function runs on the I/O board microprocessor and continuously monitor the commands from the application running on the unit. If no commands are detected within a configured time (MWD Timeout), the I/O board's processor automatically reboots and reverts to the default configuration described above. This function ensures a safe configuration is set in case of emergency situations (unit failure, communication error or software issues) to prevent damage to controlled devices or any hazards to personnel.

Technical parameters

(!)

Attention:
Each analog input have corresponding ground terminal located below. Connecting to any other ground terminal may result in higher measuring inaccuracy, worse EMC and bypasses integrated protection.

Input terminals AIx
Ground conductors AGx
Type of input SINK (measurement relative to the ground)
Input functions 0–10 V⎓ voltage meas.
0–2.5 V⎓ voltage meas.
4–20 mA current meas.
90–2000 Ω resistance meas.
Protection type Integrated overvoltage
Maximum input voltage 15 V⎓
Maximum input current 25 mA
Galvanic isolation Yes, see illustrations below (Functional, cannot exceed SELV)

(!)

Attention:
Measurements outside the specified range may reduce the accuracy of the measurement and/or reduce the input impedance.

In case of strong interference to the cable (EN 6100-6-4), the measurement accuracy can be reduced to 1 % of the measured value. The use of additional EMC filters and shielded cabling is recommended (connect shield to the ground point of the device).
