Regular mode

The regular mode of the device's startup. The device enters this mode several seconds after plugging in the power supply. The mode is physically indicated by PWR LED continuous emitting and ACT LED emitting with short flashes.

mDNS record

In regular mode, a mDNS (multicast DNS) record is published on the network, which allows device to be found via name instead of IP address.

We can simply say that you do not need to know devices IP address, which could be changed, but you only need to know its name, which will not change without targeted modification. For Unipi devices, by default it is a combination of model designation and serial number separated by a dash in the form: model-serialNumber. Both information are available on the product label of the device.

The hostname can be changed at any time and thus the mDNS record is changed at the same time, or the mDNS record can be forced to change without changing the hostname.

Examples of use:
By default, the mDNS record is the same as the hostname in the above form, e.g.:

e410-sn1

For most uses (displaying the web interface or SSH connections), you need to add .local to the end of the string:

e410-sn1.local

For some services it is also necessary to add protocol information before this string. For example, to display the web interface, some web browsers require prefix http://, e. g.:

http://e410-sn1.local

(!)

Note:
Because the Unipi Edge is shipped with Base OS preinstalled, no web interface is present on the device by default.

First connection of the device

(!)

Note:
Unipi Edge has one or two interfaces marked as eth0 (1 Gbps) and eth1 (100 Mbps). By default, these are standalone network interfaces, but with appropriate modifications they can be connected to a br0 network bridge and then work as a two-port switch.

Connection via a local network with DHCP server

Despite its rather complicated name, this approach is simple and the most frequent connection method. All you need to do is to connect Unipi Edge to a computer network via ethernet cable, and then connect a computer or tablet to the same network (using either Ethernet or Wi-Fi). The network's DHCP server (router or Wi-Fi router) will then automatically provided both devices with an IP address from the available address range.

Unipi Edge's IP address can be obtained either from the DHCP server, or by using a suitable network scan program (such as Advanced IP Scanner). In most cases, however, the mDNS record will suffice.

The used IP addresses are samples.

Direct connection

This method requires a physical link between the computer and the Unipi Edge device via Ethernet cable. As this solution does not include a DHCP server, both the computer and the Unipi Edge are assigned with a random IP address from the range of 169.254.XXX.XXX.

The Unipi Edge device's IP address can be obtained by using a suitable network scan program (such as Advanced IP Scanner). In most cases, however, the mDNS record will suffice.

The used IP addresses are samples.

Attention:
Unlike previous Unipi products, the default ssh password is randomly generated and written on the informational label.
