LED indication

Edge

This article contains the description of LED indication and all device states of Unipi Edge.

Label Function Meaning Colour
PWR On Supply voltage indication Red
ACT Blinking Indicates that operating system is running
Can be customized
Green
Digital inputs (DI) On Indication of log.1 at the input Green
Digital outputs (DO) On Indication of output in active state Green
TX (S) On Indication of serial line broadcasting Green
RX (S) On Indication of serial line receiving Green
User LEDs (X) Selectable Programmable user LEDs Green
WiFi (optional) On Indication of wireless connection Green

(!)

Note:
Behavior of the ACT LED can be changed. You can find the setting in /sys/class/leds/act-led/. It is set to timer mode by default

Description of LTE LEDs

LED OFF ON Flashing
SIM LTE service (daemon) is not active
(disabled or not installed)
SIM is OK Slow - No sim inserted (or SIM corrupted)
Fast - wrong PIN
NET Not registered to LTE network Registered to network —
SIG No signal Excellent signal Signal quality - faster ∼ better
INT No WAN access Unit online, backup active
(or single interface only)
Slow - connected via the primary WAN interface, backup inactive
Fast - connected via backup WAN interface

(!)

Note:
All LEDs flashing — LTE module is restarting.

The following chapters describe all LED states for the Unipi Edge:

  • Normal startup
  • Run in service mode
  • Upload/Backup OS
  • Standard functions - communication via RS-485, DirectSwitch indication, MasterWatchDog, …
  • FW update on I/O boards

All LEDs are off

State: Power-Off

The unit power supply is unplugged. If the PWR LED does not change its state on the unit even after connecting the power supply, try another power supply. If the state does not change after replacing the power supply, it is likely that the unit has been damaged. In this case, please contact technical support.

PWR is On

State: Power-On

The unit is powered. If the unit is run in regular or service mode and it remains in this state longer than a minute without change, it is possible that it is damaged. In this case, please contact technical support.

This state also happens, when the unit is in initialization mode.

State: OS on main processor is running

ACT LED:
ON: 2000ms / OFF: 50ms

The device's OS is running. The device works correctly.

State: RS-485 traffic

TX/RX LED:
randomly blinking

The program in the unit communicates via a serial line S1-RS485.

PWR is On, ACT is Off and the rest is blinking

State: Service mode

Blinking speed:
ON: 600ms / OFF: 600ms

Unit is in service mode.

PWR is On, ACT is Off and the rest is blinking rapidly

State: Flashing/Backup

Blinking speed:
ON: 80ms / OFF: 80ms

Indication of flashing or backup of OS.

DirectSwitch function

The DirectSwitch function is implemented directly in the microprocessor of the I/O and is therefore independent of the control SW i.e., also of communication with inputs and outputs. You can read more about this function in the article about description of inputs and outputs. The function can be configured in one of three modes, their short description and illustrative LED indication can be found below:

DirectSwitch Copy

Input state is copied to the output.

DirectSwitch Inverse-copy

Negated state of the input is set on the output.

DirectSwitch Toggle

If a rising edge is detected on the input, the output state is negated.

Master Watchdog

If the function is enabled on the microprocessor, the processor continuously monitors the communication from the computing module. If no commands are detected during the set time, the section processor automatically restarts and sets the saved default configuration. You can read more about this function in the article about description of inputs and outputs.

I/O board firmware update

When flashing FW I/O board, all LEDs in the top and bottom row are On, except for every fourth. LEDs that are not fitted are also included in this rule.

Completion of the update is indicated by turning On every second LED and subsequent restart of the I/O board is indicated by turning On all LEDs, including ACT.

The Unipi Edge unit can run in three modes. In the regular, in the service and in the initialization mode. Each of these modes is indicated by a specific blinking of the LEDs.

In regular mode

In regular mode, you may encounter the following LED states:

Behaviour description Meaning Off On
All LEDs are on for 300 ms Start of the processor (power connection) - 300ms
Every other is on (even) SW reset of processor - 1000ms
All but every fourth light is on Firmware update. Do not turn off the unit! - >1000ms

Service mode

(i)

If you are looking up for a guide on how to enter and use the service mode, please visit this article.

The SERVICE (SVC) button is pressed and held before plugging in the power supply. After plugging the power supply in, the “uboot” bootloader will start first. The SERVICE button can be released approximately 5 seconds after plugging in the power supply.

After a while, the service mode starts, indicated by the slow blinking of all diodes, except PWR and ACT.

Initialization mode

(i)

If you are looking up for a guide on how to enter and use the initialization mode, please visit this article.
